NJCAA lauds three from Region 8

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 18, 2016) - Three student-athletes from Region 8 took home Player of the Week honors on Thursday.

Lakiah Sims from Palm Beach State College was named NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Player of the Week; Gage Hutchinson of Daytona State College was named NJCAA DI Baseball Pitcher of the Week; and Courtney Geddings of Florida SouthWestern State College was named NJCAA DI Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Each student-athlete received the corresponding Region 8 award on Tuesday. 

Sims, a sophomore from Riverdale, Ga., averaged 24.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block in two games during the voting period. She shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

Sims led Palm Beach State to a 2-0 week with SoCon wins over Indian River State (70-62) and St. Petersburg (66-58). She recorded back-to-back double-doubles – 27 points and 16 rebounds vs. Indian River State and 21 points and 16 rebounds vs. St. Petersburg. 

Sims is the season's fourth recipient from Region 8, joining Miami Dade College's Jaiveonna Norris, Daytona State College's Brittney Chambers and Gulf Coast State College's Kristina King. 

Hutchinson, a sophomore right-hander from Port Orange, Fla., was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. He threw a complete game in the Falcons’ 3-1 win over Eastern Florida State on February 10, allowing five hits, one run (unearned) and one walk while striking out five.

He is the second straight pitcher from Region 8 to receive the award, joining Tallahassee Community College's Craig Olson. 

Geddins, a freshman right-hander from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, was 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA in four appearances during the voting period. 

She recorded complete-game victories vs. nationally-ranked opponents Miami Dade (1-0) and Spartanburg Methodist (2-1), as well as Gulf Coast State (6-1).

Geddins struck out 11 in the win over Miami Dade and followed that with 19 strikeouts in the win over Spartanburg Methodist. In 22 total innings, allowed 13 hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks while striking out 37.

She, too, is the second straight pitcher from Region 8 to earn the award, joining the College of Central Florida's Kalen McGill.
