Broward's Rodriguez, NWF State's Johnson take NJCAA honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 28, 2016) - Broward College's Orlando Rodriguez and Northwest Florida State College's Paige Johnson were recognized by the NJCAA on Thursday.

Rodriguez was named NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week while Johnson was named NJCAA Division I Softball Player of the Week.

Both players received the same honors by Region 8 on Tuesday.

Rodriguez, a sophomore right-hander from Miami, Fla., was 1-0, with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. He threw a two-hit shutout in Broward’s 4-0 win over Miami Dade on April 19. In the win, he struck out 10 and allowed four walks.

Johnson, a freshman first baseman from Clarksville, Tenn., batted .615 (8-for-13) with six runs scored, one double, four home runs and eight RBIs in four games during the voting period. She hit safely and scored a run in each game and also homered in all four games. 

She was 3-for-7 with two home runs and three RBIs in a Panhandle Conference doubleheader vs. Gulf Coast State (April 19) and was 5-for-6 with two homers and five RBI in doubleheader vs. NJCAA DII No. 1 LSU-Eunice.
