FCSAA Volleyball Notebook: October 14

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 14, 2014) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its Volleyball Coaches’ Poll and Player of the Week recipients for October 14.

The next poll will be released October 21.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Player of the Week
Julymar Otero, Central Florida
Freshman – RS
Toa Baja, Puerto Rico

The College of Central Florida’s Julymar Otero is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Player of the Week. Otero, a freshman from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, averaged 7.4 kills, 0.3 assists, 0.3 aces, 2.6 digs and 0.4 blocks over ten sets and three matches during the voting period. She helped Central Florida to a 3-0 week, all in Mid-Florida Conference play, including back-to-back record-breaking performances to begin the week. Against No. 16 Santa Fe (October 7), she recorded 26 kills, surpassing the previous school record of 25. She broke her own mark the next time out, tallying 32 kills against Daytona State (October 9). She was credited with 14 digs against Daytona State and 12 more against St. Johns River State (October 11) for her second double-double of the week. Otero also recorded a .412 hitting percentage over the three matches.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Silvia Galeano, Miami Dade
Sophomore – OH
Medellin, Colombia

Miami Dade College’s Silvia Galeano is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. Galeano, a sophomore from Medellin, Colombia, averaged 4.6 digs and 0.8 blocks over 17 sets and five matches during the voting period. She recorded double-digit digs in all five matches and was one kill against Jefferson College (October 10) shy of doing the same in that category. Of note, she recorded 13 kills and 11 digs against NJCAA No. 17 Hutchinson (October 11) while posting a .458 hitting percentage. In addition, she averaged 3.6 kills per set for the week.
