FCSAA Baseball/Softball Notebook: March 31

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 31, 2015) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Polls and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for March 31.

The next poll will be released Tuesday, April 7.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week
Matt Piatt, Polk State
Sophomore - OF
Seminole, Fla. 

Polk State College’s Matt Piatt is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week. Piatt, a sophomore from Seminole, Fla., batted .667 (10-for-15) with five runs scored and one RBI in four games during the voting period. He hit safely in all four games – recording multi-hit games in each one – to run his hitting streak to 10 games overall. He started the week with a pair of three-hit games against South Florida State, going a combined 6-for-8, then finished the week by going 4-for-7 in two games against Hillsborough.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Anthony Delaney, Palm Beach State

Palm Beach State College’s Anthony Delaney is this week’s NJCAA Region8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Delaney, a sophomore from Wellington, Fla., was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. Against Southern Conference rival Indian River State on March 24, Delaney tossed a four-hit shutout, walked none and struck out five in Palm Beach State’s 1-0 victory.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week
Maddi Johnson, Florida State College at Jacksonville
Freshman – C/OF
Gilbert, Ariz. 

Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Maddi Johnson is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week. Johnson, a freshman from Gilbert, Ariz., batted .600 (6-for-10) with seven runs scored, one double, one triple, two home runs, seven RBIs and one stolen base in four games during the voting period. She led the Blue Wave to a 3-1 week including a 21-4, game two win over Lake-Sumter State on March 24 in which she was 2-for-3, scored three runs, homered and drove in three runs. Four days later against Santa Fe, she was a combined 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBIs in the doubleheader. In addition to her six hits, Johnson also drew six walks. 

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Jessica Elliott, Chipola
Sophomore – RHP
Orlando, Fla. 

Chipola College’s Jessica Elliott is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Elliott, a sophomore from Orlando, Fla., went 2-0 with one save and a 0.00 ERA in three appearances during the voting period. Elliott enjoyed two solid bookend outings – a complete-game, 12-strikeout effort vs. Gulf Coast State on March 24 and a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts against nationally-ranked Tallahassee three days later. In between, she picked up the save in game two vs. Gulf Coast State. For the week, Elliott tallied 14.2 innings in the circle and allowed only three hits and one unearned run while walking only two and striking out 27.
