FCSAA Basketball Notebook: February 10

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 10, 2015) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Polls and Player of the Week selections for February 10. 

The next poll will be released Tuesday, February 17.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Deandre Turner, Broward
Freshman – Guard
Winter Park, Fla.

Broward College’s Deandre Turner is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Turner, a freshman from Winter Park, Fla., averaged 30.0, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.0 block in two games during the voting period. Against nationally-ranked Eastern Florida State on February 4, he scored 29 points despite his team coming up short in overtime, 87-82. Three days later, however, he knocked down eight three-pointers as part of a 31-point effort that helped the Seahawks down Palm Beach State 71-70. For the week, Turner shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the floor, 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the three-point line and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free throw line. 

Player of the Week Honorable Mention

  • Wesley Alcegaire, Daytona State – averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in two games
  • Maljum Mcrea, St. Petersburg – averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games
  • Kyle Meyer, Eastern Florida State – averaged 21.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games
  • Shane Temara, Pasco-Hernando State – averaged 15.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Evelyn Akhator, Chipola
Sophomore – Forward/Center
Lagos, Nigeria 

Chipola College’s Evelyn Akhator is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Akhator, a sophomore from Lagos, Nigeria, averaged 22.0 points, 16.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 5.5 blocks in two games during the voting period. Her 24-point, 22-rebound effort helped Chipola to a win at nationally-ranked Tallahassee on February 3. Then, four days later, she added another double-double, 20 points and 11 rebounds, in an 87-31 victory at Pensacola State. For the week, Akhator shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) from the floor and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

Player of the Week Honorable Mention

  • Imari Brown, Miami Dade – 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists in her only game of the week vs. Indian River State
  • Brittney Chambers, Daytona State – averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in two games
  • Breonna O’Conner, Indian River State – 26 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals in her only game of the week vs. Miami Dade
  • Daniela Wallen, Northwest Florida State – averaged 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games
  • Simone Westbrook, Northwest Florida State – averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 4.5 steals and 2.0 blocks in two games
