TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 28, 2023) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Baseball, Softball, Women's Tennis & Beach Volleyball.

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (March 20-26)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Player of the Week: Kevin Karstetter, State College of Florida
  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Tobin Moran, Santa Fe
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Player of the Week: Cassidy Boltz, Gulf Coast State
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week: Belle Sardja, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Player of the Week: Kaleb Freeman, St. Johns River State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Logan Adams, South Florida State

Sports Updates

  • DI Women's Basketball: Northwest Florida State College won its second National Championship on Monday evening, defeating Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College in overtime. Bart Walker was named Coach of the Tournament and Sakima Walker was the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Eastern Florida State College just missed making the Championship Game an All-Florida affair, falling to Trinity Valley in the National Semifinals. Gulf Coast State College won its first game of the tournament before falling to Jones (Miss.) College at the buzzer in second-round action.
  • DI Men's Basketball: Northwest Florida State lost in the National Championship Game to John A. Logan (Ill.) Community College, finishing as National Runners-up. JAL knocked out Tallahassee Community College in the National Semifinals, ending the Eagles' run after three wins. Chipola College won its opening-round game before falling to Midland (Texas) College in second-round action.
  • DII Men's Basketball: Florida Gateway College put a huge scare into top-seed Davidson-Davie (N.C.) Community College, leading by double-digits at halftime before falling in the opening round of the Division II National Tournament. The Timberwolves lost in consolation bracket play to Chesapeake (Md.) College to end their season at 15-13. 
  • Indian River State College Field Dedication Baseball: After taking two wins against then-No. 1 College of Central Florida, Santa Fe College rose to No. 2 in the NJCAA Division I baseball poll. Central Florida fell to No. 5. Pensacola State College and Gulf Coast State are Nos. 12 and 19, respectively, while Florida SouthWestern State College received votes. The NJCAA Division II baseball poll saw a shakeup, thanks to Pasco-Hernando State College sweeping a three-game series from St. Johns River State College. The Bobcats jumped to No. 10 while the Vikings now sit at No. 17. This Saturday, Indian River State College will have a dedication ceremony for Mike Easom Field, recognizing the Pioneers' former skipper. Ceremonies begin at 12:45 p.m.
  • Softball: Florida SouthWestern regained the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I softball poll, two spots ahead of No. 3 Northwest Florida State. Central Florida is No. 8, Seminole State College, No. 10, and Indian River State College, No. 15, while Gulf Coast State received votes. In the NJCAA Division II softball poll, Lake-Sumter State College is ranked No. 18. 
  • Men's Golf: Eastern Florida State is ranked No.5 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NJCAA DI Coaches Poll.
  • Women's Golf: Eastern Florida State is currently in first place after the first round of the Deercroft Spring Break Invite in Wagram, N.C., and will go for its first victory of the spring on Tuesday. Over the weekend, Daytona State College competed at UGA's Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Angelica Holman was the Falcons' top performer, finishing tied for 42nd at +6. Seminole State is currently competing at Stetson's Babs Steffens Invitational, where it sits in fifth place heading into the final day of competition.
  • Women's Tennis: Top-ranked Hillsborough Community College is still unbeaten following a 9-0 win over State College of Florida in Region 8 play. St. Petersburg College picked up an 8-1 victory against Eastern Florida State heading into Friday's showdown vs. HCC. 
  • Beach Volleyball: The inaugural FCSAA Beach Volleyball Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1 at UMR Sports Facility in Bradenton, Fla. The four-team, double-elimination tournament gets underway at 11:30 a.m. Friday with top-seed Palm Beach State College playing No. 4 State College of Florida.
  • Outdoor Track & Field: Tallahassee's first NJCAA qualifier of the spring is sophomore Troy Williams, who placed third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.01 at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open.
