TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 21, 2023) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Baseball and Softball.


Region 8 Coaches' Polls - March 20, 2023

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (March 13-19)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Player of the Week: Scott Mudler, Northwest Florida State
  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Jeremy Weaver, State College of Florida
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Player of the Week: Georgia Hood, Pensacola State
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week: Keivana Durand, Seminole State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Player of the Week: Aidan Corn, Pasco-Hernando State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Logan Jones, Pasco-Hernando State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Player of the Week: Desiree Romeo, Lake-Sumter State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week: Ali Shenefield, Lake-Sumter State

Sports Updates

  • DI Men's Basketball: "The Tournament" is underway in Hutchinson, Kan., and Region 8 went 2-for-2 on Monday's opening day of first round action. No. 9 seed Chipola College rolled past Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College, 96-66, while No. 12 seed Tallahassee Community College overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Trinidad (Colo.) Junior College, 78-75. No. 7 seed Northwest Florida State College opens tournament play at 9:30 p.m. eastern on Tuesday against Butler (Kan.) Community College.
  • DI Women's Basketball: No. 11 seed Gulf Coast State College will be the first of Region 8's three teams to take the floor in Lubbock, Texas, when it plays Three Rivers (Mo.) Community College at 1 p.m. eastern on Thursday. No. 8 seed Northwest Florida State and No. 2 seed Eastern Florida State College will also play on Thursday at 5 and 7 p.m. eastern, respectively. 
  • DII Men's Basketball: Florida Gateway received the No. 16 seed in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament and will play top-seed Davidson-Davie (N.C.) Community College at 2 p.m. eastern on Tuesday.
  • Flag Football: Florida Gateway split a doubleheader on Friday, beating the University of Fort Lauderdale before dropping its first game of the season to Thomas (Ga.) University. The Timberwolves enter Spring Break with a 7-1 record.
  • Baseball: In the NJCAA's Division I poll, the College of Central Florida continues to hold the No. 1 ranking while Santa Fe College moved up one spot to No. 5 ahead of this week's highly-anticipated three-game series with the Patriots. Gulf Coast State moved into the top ten at No. 10 while Pensacola State College is No. 13. Miami Dade College received votes. In the NJCAA's Division II poll, St. Johns River State College moved up one spot to No. 6 while Pasco-Hernando State College remained No. 16. Those two teams will play a three-game series this Friday and Saturday.  
  • Softball: Region 8 now boasts the top two teams - and four of the top nine - in the NJCAA's Division I poll. Northwest Florida State is the nation's new No. 1 team followed by No. 2 Florida SouthWestern State College, No. 8 Central Florida and No. 9 Seminole State College. Indian River State College remained No. 18 and Pensacola State continues to receive votes. In the Division II poll, Lake-Sumter State College is ranked for a third straight week at No. 18 and Pasco-Hernando State received votes. Those two teams play a doubleheader on Tuesday.
  • Women's Golf: Seminole State College finished eighth out of 16 teams at the Spring Break Shootout, held in Dade City, Fla., and hosted by Western Kentucky University.
  • Men's Golf: Eastern Florida State placed second in the 2023 Glenlakes Invitational in Foley, Ala.
  • Women's Tennis: In the latest ITA team rankings, Hillsborough Community College continues to hold down the No. 1 ranking. St. Petersburg College is ranked fifth with Eastern Florida State and State College of Florida at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively. The FCSAA Women's Tennis Championships will take place April 12-14 at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
  • Men's Tennis: Eastern Florida State is ranked No. 3 in the ITA team rankings.
  • Swimming & Diving: Region 8's 2022-23 NJCAA All-America honorees have been updated to include Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving.
  • Beach Volleyball: Among NJCAA programs, Palm Beach State College currently boasts the top-ranked #1 Pair (Angelina Botolino/Lola Vidamour), #2 Pair (Alli Bryant/Anna Cruz), #3 Pair (Nina Vallesi/Mady Koons) and #4 Pair (Dena Otte/Rita Gonzalez-Cuevas Campos), per CollegeBeachVolleyball.com.
