TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 25, 2023) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Baseball and Softball.


Region 8 Coaches' Polls - April 24, 2023

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (April 17-23)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Player of the Week: A.J. Shaver, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Kennedy, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Player of the Week: Avery Brewer, Seminole State
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week: Alina Varga, Indian River State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Player of the Week: Roger Vergara, St. Johns River State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Chay Yeager, Pasco-Hernando State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Player of the Week: Nicolette Luzzi-Salerno, St. Johns River State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week: Ali Shenefield, Lake-Sumter State

NOTE: Baseball and Softball recipients will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Sports Updates

  • Softball returns to Florida Gateway College in Spring 2024 and, to commemorate the relaunch, the college will dedicate its newly-renovated field in honor of longtime coach and administrator Jean Williams. The field dedication ceremony will take place at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 26.
  • Women's Tennis: Hillsborough Community College will carry the No. 1 ranking into next month's NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. The undefeated Hawks lead four Region 8 schools in the top ten - St. Petersburg College is No. 5 followed by No. 9 Eastern Florida State College and No. 10 State College of Florida. Hillsborough's Arina Gamretkaia is the top-ranked individual player while she and Esmee Andresen are the top-ranked doubles pairing in the country.
  • Men's Tennis: Eastern Florida State is ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division I poll. The Titans' Hugo Car is ranked third among individuals while he and teammate Lucas Gonzalez are the fifth-ranked doubles team.
  • Beach Volleyball: The FCSAA dominated the NJCAA's inaugural Beach Volleyball Championships. Palm Beach State College rolled to a perfect 6-0 over the three-day event to claim the National Championship. In the championship match, Palm Beach State beat St. Johns River State College, who beat Lake-Sumter State College in the semifinals. Lake-Sumter State won the third-place match while State College of Florida placed seventh. 
  • Softball: In the NJCAA Division I softball poll, previously top-ranked Florida SouthWestern State College fell two spots to No. 3. Four other Region 8 schools are ranked between sixth and twelfth - No. 6 Northwest Florida State College, No. 8 College of Central Florida, No. 9 Seminole State College and No. 12 Indian River State College. Lake-Sumter State continues to receive votes in the NJCAA Division II softball poll.
  • Baseball: Central Florida reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I baseball poll while Santa Fe College slipped three spots to No. 10. Miami Dade College rose four spots to No. 16 while State College of Florida continued to receive votes. In the NJCAA Division II baseball poll, No. 10 Pasco-Hernando State College and No. 13 St. Johns River State continue to represent Region 8. 
  • Women's Golf: Seminole State College won the NJCAA Southeast District Championship in South Carolina. The Raiders held off a gallant effort from Eastern Florida State, who joined Seminole State as automatic qualifiers to the NJCAA Women's Golf Championships.
  • Men's Golf: After the first day of play, Eastern Florida State is leading the NJCAA Southeast District Championship, being played at Viera East Golf Club in Rockledge, Fla. 
  • Track & Field: Tallahassee Community College punched its second ticket to the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships when Lynette Scutari posted a time of 11.88 in the 100m at the Pure Athletics Invitational.  
  • Women's Flag Football: Florida Gateway College completed a 10-1 regular season by sweeping a pair of games at the University of Fort Lauderdale, winning 12-6 and 39-13.
