Pasco-Hernando, Daytona State claim cross country championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 26, 2018) - The FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Cross Country Championships were held at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

In the team standings, Pasco-Hernando State College won the women's championship for the third straight year while Daytona State College, running its inaugural season, claimed the men's title. 

Pasco-Hernando State had four of the top five female runners en route to a score of 22 points, well ahead of runners-up Daytona State. Tallahassee Community College, South Florida State College and Florida Gateway College rounded out the team standings. 

Pasco-Hernando State's Olivia D'Angelo set a championship race record with a time of 19:44.2 in the 5K race and led a quartet of Bobcat runners at the front of the field. Isabel Oliveto, Quincy Mayer and Grace D'Angelo finished second through fourth, respectively. Daytona State's Kris Gray finished fifth to round out the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 All-State team. 

In the men's 8K, Daytona State took home the championship with 19 points to outpace Tallahassee and Florida State College-Jacksonville. 

Although they weren't part of the team scoring, Seminole State College laid claim to the individual championship - Hillary Kandie crossed the line first in a time of 26:41.4 to establish the race record. His teammate, Yassin Raffey, finished second. 

Daytona State's Tyler Simmons, Tallahassee's Brandon Flagler, and Daytona State's Ari G-Wolf finished third through fifth, respectively to round on the men's FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 All-State team. 

Pasco-Hernando State's Jacki Wachtel (women) and Daytona State's Judy Wilson (men) were named FCSAA Coaches of the Year.
