Murphy, Stewart nab NJCAA honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 7, 2018) - Region 8 claimed two more NJCAA Player of the Week awards on Wednesday.

Florida SouthWestern State College's Tremell Murphy was named NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week and Northwest Florida State College's Grant Stewart was named NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week. 

Murphy, a sophomore forward from Griffith, Ind., averaged 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.7 blocks in three games during the voting period. He shot 52.4 percent (22-of-42) from the floor, 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from the three-point line and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.

Murphy helped Florida SouthWestern to three Suncoast Conference victories during the week, keeping the Bucs atop the conference standings. 

He had 19 points and 12 rebounds vs. Polk State and narrowly missed double-doubles in his other two games – 27 points and nine rebounds vs. St. Petersburg and 14 points and nine rebounds (also seven assists and six steals) vs. State College of Florida.

Stewart, a sophomore lefty from Paxton, Fla., went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. He tossed a seven-inning, four-hit complete game shutout against East Mississippi. 

In the win, he walked none and struck out 13.
