FSW's Murphy, Chipola's Baker-Northcross honored by NJCAA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (November 23, 2016) - Region 8 claimed both the men's and women's player of the week honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Florida SouthWestern State College's Tremell Murphy was named NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and Chipola College's Raven Baker-Northcross was named NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week. 

Murphy, a freshman forward from Griffith, Ind., averaged 27.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 0.5 blocks in two games during the voting period. 

He was named NJCAA Region 8 Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. 

Murphy shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37) from the floor, 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line and hit one of his two attempts from three-point range during the week. 

He helped Florida SouthWestern stay unbeaten with wins over Miami Dade and Central Florida. He recorded a double-double in a 105-99 win vs. Miami Dade with 33 points (13-of-21 FG) and 14 rebounds and just missed another double-double, finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds, in the win vs. Central Florida.

Baker-Northcross, a sophomore guard from Malvern, Ark., averaged 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals in two games during the voting period.

She was named NJCAA Region 8 Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. 

Baker-Northcross shot 51.4 percent (19-of-37) from the floor, 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the three-point line and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line during the week. 

She led Chipola to a 2-0 week with wins over East Georgia State and NJCAA No. 22 Georgia Highlands. 

Baker-Northcross tallied 23 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five steals in her team's 86-47 win over East Georgia. The next day, she hit eight three-pointers en route to 32 points in a 76-53 win over Georgia Highlands and also had nine rebounds in the win.

Murphy is the second men's player of the week recipient from Region 8. Daytona State College's Nashad Mackey received the award on November 16.
