NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: May 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 2, 2017) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Coaches’ Poll for May and baseball and softball Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for games played April 24-30. 

This is the final baseball coaches’ poll for 2017 and the final softball player and pitcher of the week selections. 

The last baseball player and pitcher of the week awards will be announced following the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA State Tournament.

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week
Cole Vann, Tallahassee
Freshman – DH
Colquitt, Ga.

  • Batted .500 (5-for-10) with three runs scored, one double, two home runs and 10 RBIs in three games during the voting period
  • Hit safely and recorded an RBI in all three games
  • In the Eagles’ first must-win game of the week, he was 3-for-5, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs in an 11-5 win over Northwest Florida State
  • The very next day, he reached based four times (1-for-3, 3 BB) and smacked a 10th-inning grand slam that proved to be the difference in a 10-8 win over Daytona State that punched Tallahassee’s ticket to the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA State Tournament

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Tommy Romero, Eastern Florida State
Sophomore – RHP
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 

  • 0-0, 1.13 ERA in one appearance during the voting period
  • Got a no-decision in the Titans’ 3-2, 10-inning Wild Card game win over St. Petersburg to clinch a berth in the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA State Tournament
  • In eight innings, he allowed six hits, one earned run and no walks while striking out 12

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Player of the Week
Christian Quinn, Florida SouthWestern
Freshman – CF
Hattiesburg, Miss. 

  • Batted .647 (11-for-17) with six runs scored, two triples, three RBIs and two stolen bases in five games during the voting period
  • Named MVP of the NJCAA District/FCSAA State Softball Tournament, helping FSW to the championship
  • Hit safely and scored in all five games, including a 4-for-4 effort vs. NJCAA No. 19 Daytona State
  • Was 2-for-4 and scored twice vs. No. 9 Central Florida and went 3-for-4 in the Bucs’ 4-0 win over No. 7 Seminole State to clinch a berth in the NJCAA Tournament

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Morgan Goree, Chipola
Freshman – RHP
Senoia, Ga. 

  • 5-0, 0.56 ERA in five appearances during the voting period
  • Helped Chipola battle through the loser’s bracket at the FCSAA State Tournament and earn a berth to St. George
  • Tossed complete-game shutouts vs. Hillsborough and NJCAA No. 16 Indian River State, the latter in an elimination game
  • Inheriting a 2-1 deficit, she shut out No. 9 Central Florida over the final three innings then picked up the win when Chipola rallied for a 4-2 victory
  • Started and held No. 7 Seminole State to one earned run in four innings in a 6-2 win that clinched a berth to the NJCAA Tournament
  • In 25 total innings in the circle, she allowed only 18 hits, four runs (two earned) and four walks while striking out 29
